Ecumenical Hermeneutic Seminars Held PDF Print E-mail

Ecumenical Hermenutics Seminar at MESC, YangonFaith and Order Commission program held the third seminar on “Ecumenical Hermeneutics” on 26-28 October 2009 at the Myanmar Council of Churches. There were altogether 22 participants at the seminar, 10 participants represented denominational churches and 4 representatives from Regional Council of Churches. There were 4 presentation at the seminar namely,(1) the History of Faith and Order Commission,(2) Ecumenical Hermeneutics: Towards Visible Unity, (3)Ecumenical Hermeneutics: Church as Hermeneutical Community, (4) Philosophical  Hermeneutics in Myanmar Context.

Participants unanimously agreed on two major concerns and believe that 1) it is not the will of God to live separately, one next to the other,2) it is a must to work together for the glory of God.

The forth phase of “towards visible unity” seminar of faith and order was held on 27-29, November 2009 at the MESC building, 601, Pyay Road, Yangon.  There were 27 participants from 7 denomination Churches and 3 representatives of regional (Local) Council of Churches in Myanmar as special invitees. 

Rev. Dr. A Ko Lay Presented a paper on “the Past, the Present and the Future of Myanmar Council of Churches, Rev.C.Thaung Lin  narrated on “A brief history and activities of Faith and Order” and Rev. Smith Ngulh Za Thawng  (former General Secretary of MCC)  the Nature and Mission of the Church. Participants of the seminar expressed their enthusiasm to find out a model unanimously agree and applicable in the context of Myanmar.

Rev. Dr. James at the ASEM meetingRev Dr. James Ngun Hlei, the Associate General Secretary of Myanmar Council of Churches attended the ASEM Interfaith/Intercultural Retreat for Religious Leaders during 9-12 September 2009 at the Yogyakarta in Indonesia. Rev. James was delegated to the Retreat by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Union of Myanmar. The retreat was chaired by Indonesia and was attended by religious leaders/figures/officials from 24 ASEM Partners, including Austria, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Denmark, European Commission, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, United Kingdom, and Vietnam. The retreat was also attended by a representative from Syria, as a special guest of the Minister of Religious Affairs of Indonesia. The retreat was co-sponsored by Italy, Singapore, United Kingdom, the Philippines and Thailand.
There is a summary of the retreat having 4 pages(A4) with a 19 paragraphs. Myanmar Council of Churches appreciated that Rev. Dr. James Ngun Hlei was chosen to represent the country at the Interfaith/Intercultural Retreat for Religious Leaders.

A Seminar on 2008 Constitution held PDF Print E-mail

A Seminar on Christian participation in the nation building from the perspective of the 2008 constitution was held on 8th September 2009 at the Myanmar Ecumenical sharing centre 601 Pyay Road, Kamayut, Yangon. Prof.U Tun  Aung Chain presented a document in power point on how Christian and other religions are entitled according to the 2008 Constitution as well as the minorities’ rights. General Secretary of MCC at the openingCommunication Section of the Myanmar Council of Churches held a Communication Consultation at the Myanmar Ecumenical Sharing Centre, 601 Pyay Road, Yangon, Myanmar on 11-12 August 2009. The Consultation was attended by 22 media related persons from Christian Organization and member Churches of the MCC. The first consultation on Communication was held on 24th February 1999 at the same venue as a preliminary consultation. The recommendations from the consultation had been brought to the EC meeting and Biennial General Meeting that a multifaceted programme of media awareness seminars and workshops with some technical know-hows have been carried out over a decade of years.

WCC elected New General Secretary PDF Print E-mail

The newly elected General Secretary of WCCNorwegian theologian and pastor Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, 48, was elected 7th general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Thursday 27 August during its Central Committee meeting. Tveit will be the youngest general secretary since Willem A. Visser 't Hooft who had led the WCC while it was in process of formation and following its founding assembly 61 years ago.

Since 2002, Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit has been the general secretary of the Church of Norway Council on Ecumenical and International Relations. He was previously secretary for the Church of Norway Doctrinal Commission, 1999-2000, and Church-State Relations, 2001-02. He is an ordained pastor in the Church of Norway and has also served as a parish priest in Haram, Møre Diocese, 1988-91 and an army chaplain during his compulsory year of national service in 1987-88.

Tveit is a member of the WCC Faith and Order Plenary Commission, co-chair of the WCC Palestine Israel Ecumenical Forum core group, a member of the board of directors and executive committee of the Christian Council of Norway, moderator of the Church of Norway - Islamic Council of Norway contact group and the same for the Jewish Congregation contact group. He is also a member of the Inter-Faith Council of Norway and a member of the board of trustees of Norwegian Church Aid.
